was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1956. He studied Applied Mathematics, Engineering and Physics in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, and obtained his PhD (1985) in high-energy Physics working in the Linear Accelerator Center project of the University of Stanford, California, USA.
His stay as researcher in United States, fixed that the computing for accelerator experiments was to become a theme of his life's work. It includes some work at Fermilab and led to his first job as a post-doctoral research fellow. His work included developing a gas calorimeter for the Mac detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator.
In 1987 he moved to Barcelona to set up a research group in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona mainly concentrated on the detectors at CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics) and the massive computing issues of handling the data generated by them.
Subsequently, he was Assistant Professor, Associated Professor and finally full Professor at UAB (1995).
During 1999 and 2002 he moved to Geneva to lead the IT Division of the CERN.
